Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year… but it can also be the most wasteful. Below we share some small sustainable swaps that we can all make throughout the festive period to reduce our environmental footprint.
Buy the right Christmas tree

Real trees have a much lower carbon footprint than fake trees, and it's best to buy one which has been grown locally rather than one that has been imported. The most sustainable option is to buy a living potted Christmas tree which can slowly grow in the garden until the following year. If your tree doesn’t have roots, it’s important to dispose of it correctly or find other ways to re-use the wood at home.

Our top tips:

  • Recycle - most councils offer a kerbside recycling scheme where they come and collect your tree to shred into chippings for parks and woodland areas
  • Compost - trim down the branches and add to your compost pile
  • Reuse - chop up your tree to use as firewood. The dried pine needles also make for great kindling!
Flexi-Hex Christmas Gift Wrapping
Rethink your gift wrapping

The UK gets through 100 million rolls of wrapping paper every Christmas - that's approximately 227,00 miles! Using less gift wrapping is an easy way to reduce your environmental impact this year. Our Flexi-Hex® postal boxes arrive gift-ready so there’s no need to use additional gift wrapping, just add a sprig of holly or eucalyptus and tie together with string.

Our top tips:

  • Look for cards and wrapping paper made from recycled or FSC certified paper
  • Swap wrapping paper for old newspaper to avoid unnecessary waste
  • Avoid using plastic tape and ribbon which can’t be recycled – instead use paper tape or string
  • If you're feeling creative, try furoshiki, the traditional Japanese art of wrapping items in decorative cloth.
Recycle & re-use

With so much additional waste at Christmas (an extra 30% compared with the rest of the year), recycling is as important as ever! Unfortunately, not all wrapping paper can be recycled – some contains non-recyclable materials such as foil, plastic or glitter. To check whether wrapping paper is recyclable or not, do the scrunch test! If the paper remains scrunched, it’s recyclable; if it springs back, it’s probably covered with a plastic film which can’t be recycled.

Our top tips:

  • Recycle what wrapping paper you can, and don’t forget to remove any plastic tape before you do.
  • Don’t throw away all your packaging, instead find a way to reuse it. For example, our Flexi-Hex sleeves can be used again for your own gifting or repurposed for growing seeds
  • Get creative with the kids and share your inventions with us on Instagram tagging @flexi_hex with the hashtag #FlexiHexInventors
Shop responsibly

Approximately £42 million of unwanted Christmas presents end up in landfill every year, so it’s important not to get carried away with Christmas shopping and to take time thinking about gifts that are wanted or needed by the recipient.

Our top tips:

  • Buy fewer but better quality gifts to reduce the chance of gifts going to waste.
  • Not all gifts have to be store bought, why not gift an experience instead?
  • Buy from small local businesses to support your community and reduce your carbon miles
  • Buy from brands that focus on making products in a sustainable and ethical way, use quality materials, eco-friendly delivery methods and plastic-free packaging like Flexi-Hex!

Make your own decorations

There are so many ways to add some festive cheer to your house without using shop-bought decorations, all you need is a little imagination!

Our top tips:

  • Deck your ‘walls’ with fresh holly and ivy, pine, eucalyptus or mistletoe
  • Use old newspapers or old wrapping paper to make paper chains or origami stars
  • Make 3D Christmas trees using leftover delivery boxes – simply cut out two Christmas tree shapes from your cardboard, cut a line from the top of one and a line from the bottom of the other halfway and slot together!
  • Use dried oranges that will also make your home smell amazing!
