Earth Day: Inspiring Books, Films & Podcasts
The theme for Earth Day 2022 is Invest In Our Planet – a call for governments, businesses and individuals to invest in a better future for the planet. At Flexi-Hex, we’re investing in innovation. From our product to our culture, we’re rethinking the way we do business. With this in mind, our team have pulled together a list of inspiring books, podcasts and documentaries that are leading the sustainable conversation and raising environmental awareness, so we keep making better decisions not just on Earth Day but throughout the year.
our favourite podcasts
Bella recommends the Blue Earth Summit podcast: the best talks and panel discussions from the Blue Summit Event in Bristol last October.
Sam recommends The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett: inspiring interviews with some of the world’s most influential people. Although not directly related to sustainability, the pocdcast has a great focus on business and how to empower people.
Polly recommends Conscious Commerce by noissue: host Elly Strang talks to founders and experts from around the world who are building successful modern brands that consider their impact on the planet and on people.
Polly also recommends (Re)action by Homethings: a series of sustainable conversations with inspirational guests including Madeleine Shaw, Lauren Bravo and Emily Broughton.
SUstainable Book Club
Bella and Polly recommend One Pot, Pan, Planet by Anna Jones: a vegetarian recipe book that encourages a way of eating that is mindful of the planet alongside practical advice to change how we plan, shop and reduce waste.
Rose recommends Change The World For a Fiver: 50 simple changes we could make to our daily lives in order to ensure the future well-being of our communities and planet, with lovely witty illustrations!
Ailsa and Bella recommend Turning the Tide on Plastic by Lucy Siegle: practical ways to reduce and eliminate our plastic consumption and help clean up our planet. It gives a more optimistic spin on the plastic pandemic.
Ailsa recommends On Fire by Naomi Klein: Klein provides arguments for a “green new deal” and the need for environmental justice from an economic and subsequently a socio-political standpoint.
Read by nearly everyone in the office, Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard is an inspiring memoir written by the Founder of Patagonia, one of the most respected and environmentally responsible companies on earth. Some of you may have spotted some of our favourite quotes in the Flexi-Hex company scrapbook.
Documentaries to watch
Sam and Will recommend Blue Planet II by David Attenborough: a huge inspiration to our Founders as the series launched in 2017 when they were launching Flexi-Hex. The documentary sparked an increase in the level of interest on plastic pollution and a change in plastic consumption behaviour.
Will recommends Fantastic Fungi on Netflix: a descriptive time-lapse journey about the magical, mysterious, and medicinal world of fungi and their power to heal, sustain and contribute to the regeneration of life on Earth.
Steve recommends My Octopus Teacher on Netflix: the story of South African naturalist, Craig Foster, and his friendship with an octopus that was made to raise awareness of the beauty and ecological importance of South Africa’s kelp forest.
Ailsa recommends Don’t Look Up on Netflix: a comedy where two astronomers go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. Although not a documentary, it’s a really eye-opening take on the urgency of climate change and shows us what happens if we fail to take action.
